The Importance of Predicated Equations in Lung Function Tests

Abstract
Lung Function Test(LFT) is very important in the diagnosis and epidemiologic survey of occupational diseases. In Korea, the result of the tests is inaccurate because the imported spirometers use the Caucasian's predictive equations. Recently,
Peak
and
Choi reported new predictive equation is for Korean male workers. This study was done to examine the differences among various LFT results, the Baldwin's, the Bergland and Kudson's, and 4 Koreans' predictive equations.
In total, 110 miners were tested according to the American Thoracic Society Society guidelines. In the FVC, the mean value of our predictive equation was higher than the others' for 228-568 ml. for the FEV1, the man value of our predictive
equation
was
lower than the others' by 31-182 ml. for the lung function status, the number of obstructive type by our equation was lower than the others' by 1-2 subjects(0.9-1.8%). However, the number of restrictive type was higher by 3-4 subjects(2.8-3.7%).
Also,
the number of subjects with in the combined type was 1-2 higher. with changes in prediction equations form ours to others, 1-2 subjects changed their lung function status from combined to obstrictive to normal type.
In conclusion, the Korean predictive equation must be the same equation should be continually employed in lung function tests.
